Sept Coffee Talk Topic – Household Metaphors

by Sandy L on September 14, 2011

Folks, it’s time to start thinking about this month’s coffee talk subject.

As these coffee talks are meant to stretch the particpants as writers, I thought the next few will also include something to practice in the English Language.  Metaphors, Puns, Similes , etc

Use a Household item as a Metaphor to teach a life or personal finance lesson.

Metaphors are a little tricky because it’s very easy to confuse them with similes.  For example.  Babci is the glue that keeps the family together…is a metaphor.   Babci is as strong as an ox is a similie.  Generally if you use like or as to describe someone, it’s a similie.

Going to the household example.

“My Crockpot is a money saver” is not a metaphor, it’s a fact or an opinion.

I believe these would be examples of metaphors that would fit the theme of the next coffee talk:

My spice cabinet is the craft I board to transport me to different parts of the world.

My book collection is the eccentric family I never had.

If you are an English major or writer and want to add a few more tips on metaphors, please feel free to add it in the comments section.

Rules:

  1. Use a household item as a metaphor in a blog post that teaches a life or personal finance lesson.
  2. If interested mark your calendar for Sept 27th now so you don’t forget about it.
  3. Try to go outside your writing comfort zone. Stretch yourself.  Pick two things that seemingly don’t go together and make it work.
  4. Help me spread the word.
  5. Post on September 27th.
  6. Link back  to this site or email me so that I know you participated.
  7. I will post a master round up list at the end of my Sept 27th article. Others can copy and paste it into their own article if desired.
  8. Read and comment other’s posts, laugh, have fun, and promote your fellow blogger.

*Note, if you don’t have a blog of your own but would like to post your own content, you can also send me your article and I can post it up on my site.

The day is always extremely entertaining because we are all so different from each other in our writing styles and area of expertise.  They are always fun to read.  Good Luck coming up with some great topics.

Thank god you included examples! I’ve been reading up on my grammar rules (although these are not grammar rules, are they?) but Mike will need to help out on this one, definitely!

Oh being an English nerd, this one really piqued my interest. Hmmm…

I really regretted not doing last month’s Coffee Talk. My title would have been ‘What My Dysfunctional Cat Taught Me About Finances” (she thinks she is a dog and eats too much), but I didn’t have time to write it. I procrastinated. So I am going to start early with this one.

Oh, this sounds fun. You’ve got my mind working. I’m afraid I’ll see smoke pretty soon.

I may or may not be able to participate, travel plans being what they are. If I do, I may not be able to link back to all the participants. Great topic!!!

This sounds like fun. And since I normally do a Tuesday post anyway, Sept 27 is good for me. Of course I’ve got a crazy schedule this month, so I guess I’d better right that post this week and get it set to be published on the right day.
