This morning, my older son woke up a whole half hour early, by himself and came downstairs in an uncharacteristically perky fashion. As a result, lunches were made, everyone was dressed, fed, and ready to go almost 1/2 hour ahead of schedule.
I quickly decided this was an opportunity to have a mini-adventure. I drive by a lake on the way to daycare, so I grabbed a couple of stale hamburger buns and we made a quick pit stop to feed the birds for a few minutes. We all giggled as the seagulls stole bread from the lazy ducks. (We have a nick name for stale bread. We call it “duck bread.” ) Anyway, we ran out of bread, hopped back in the car and went back to our normal routine. My 1.5 year old threw a tantrum because he wanted to stay at the lake, but I still think it was more fun than not making the stop at all.
With 2 parents working, it’s sometimes hard to make week days meaningful. You’re normally happy if you can get everyone fed, bathed and clothed for the day. We usually leave the fun to the weekends, but I’m glad I can still keep the kids on their toes with my little 7am excursion. They never know if a surprise is around the corner.
Earlier in the week, the kid’s came home to find 4 pumpkins on our stoop. (The ones I traded for the metal cabinets and $50). That was a big hit too. The toughest part was convincing them that we had to wait to to carve them.
I just love fall. I’d love to hear what your favorite fall things are.
Mine are:
Apple Pies, Harvest Festivals, Pumpkin Carving, Hay Rides, Visiting the “apple cider man”. We have an orchard near our house that makes cider on site. My kids love watching him make cider on a Saturday morning. Yum.

Cooler weather, anything apple, Halloween, cinnamon, and spaghetti squash. (I can only eat spaghetti squash once a year or I get sick of it, but I enjoy it that one time!)
The “Apple Cider Man”, I remember as a kid watching a man make cider once! I started asking my dad about what about rotten spots on the apple or worms on the apples… I still like cider after seeing the process, but I still wonder if I’m drinking pieces of worms sometimes. But still, and incredible process and something the kids will remember fondly forever!
I had a great time when my kids do the duck thing. While I don’t enjoy feeding the ducks much, I love hearing my kids laugh (especially my son, he has a great laugh). Record it if you can next time, I’m pretty sure you’ll miss it like I do if you don’t 🙂
I love feeding the ducks and this reminds me that we have a whole loaf of freezer burned bread that we could have a good time with!
My favorite part of fall is cooler weather and that Christmassy spirit that starts perking everybody up. 🙂
