Blogging and Real Life Collide

by Sandy L on September 17, 2010

Tonight, a couple of my friends are hosting a Beer Tasting Night. One of them works for a local magazine, Berkshire Living, but she also has a fun Little Beer Blog called From This Pint On.  Okay, so I may not be cool by writing crazy stories about finances and my mom, but at least I have friends who are hipper than me.

Tonight’s brew of choice is Red.  Our contribution for the evening is Shark Attack, Double Red Ale from the Port Brewing Company of CA.

The name called out to my husband who is a big fisherman.  Hurray for fun.  Also, house parties are one of my favorite frugal forms of entertainment. We used to be the house party location of choice back in the day. In fact on some occasions, we had friends organize events at our house without even telling us first (ehem Reeder).  It was all good though. Kids or not, most of us still have an open door policy to this day. It’s one of the best part about living in a small town.

I’m due for a Babci post. If anyone is curious about a certain aspect of Babci’s life or a topic in general, do comment and I’ll work it into the next week’s blog. As you can imagine, there’s so much material, it’s sometimes hard to pick the next topic.

Anyway, have a happy Friday and Cheers to good friends and great beer!

What a great name for a beer?!? 🙂

Sounds like a great party! I don’t drink as much beer anymore, now I’m more into wines.

Have fun, sounds pretty cool !!!

Re: Babci

Does she interact differently with your children than she did with you? Does she ever go back to the Motherland? What does she say about it now? I’ve heard that when immigrants go back to their homeland they expect it to be how it was when they left eons ago, but of course it’s not. Was there a large Polish community where you grew up or was your family on its own? You mentioned she married late in life, is there a story behind that, or is that just the way it happened, no real story? What is her favourite “American” food? What does she like to grow in the garden? What brings her pleasure at this stage in her life?

Margaret, what great thought provoking questions. There are stories behind many of the questions…but I’ll answer a few. She’s 77 now and the two things she loves most is seeing and feeding my children and tending her garden. Her grandchildren bring her so much joy. She is probably the happiest now that she’s ever been.

She laments that now that life’s good she can’t enjoy it because she’s old and useless. She actually is still very active, but can’t keep up with my kids or carry them. She didn’t really get to enjoy my childhood because she worked a lot and had a rough marriage. I suppose that is true for many grandparents. They have more time and money to do things they couldn’t when they were going through it the first time around.

She grows at least 30 varieties of fruits, veggies, and herbs. A good portion of her garden is exotic berries that you can’t find around here like gooseberries and currants. She has fruit trees that are still too young to bear fruit but in her old garden she had a peach, pear, and sour cherry tree. My kid’s favorites are the raspberries and blackberries. I love her tomatoes, eggplant, basil. She also has rhubarb, beets, carrots, hot peppers, dill, parsley to name a few.

And my favorite red from last night was made by “The Hopping Frog” Brewery from Akron Ohio. I haven’t heard which was the overall winner yet.

Shark attack had a bite to it and was extremely bitter. It’s appropriately named for sure. I’m not big on bitters myself.
