Favorites Week of Oct 29th 2010

Here are some of my favorites from the week. I’ll keep it short, since I had some lengthy commentary on some of the articles below.   Thanks everyone for all the great writing. Have a great Halloween.

Heather from Want What You Have has great tips on Saving Money During a Crisis. Heather is a long time 100% debt free SAHM mom (Yeah mortgage too). If she only has $20 bucks to feed the family for the week, gosh darnit, she’s going to spend $20 and not a penny more.  Her blog is filled with loads and loads of tips and this article is a good summary of many of her best of’s. Her kids are adorable too.

$5 Dinners has a list of her Freezer Staples.  She also links to her pantry staples too. Actually the commenters made the post even better with their lists. I’m in freezer envy with Anita. She reminds me that I need to refresh my meatball stash. Maybe that will be the project for this weekend.

Minting Nickels has a Fun article about Smoking in Church. It’s her take on people at the extreme fringe of frugality.  It’s an entertaining read.

Satisfying Retirement reminds us what we can  Learn from a 3 year old.  What a nice reminder to enjoy the simple things in life and not rush through it.

Nicole and Maggie from Grumpy Rumblings of the Untenured have a juicy article on Pet Peeves. It’s a must read.

Long time readers know that I’m a wanna-be homesteader, so I just lapped up this article by Ultimate Money Blog on  New Life on a Homestead. It’s a great interview of Kendra‘s transition from debt ridden life to self sufficiency.

Money Beagle and Everyday Tips had a stink theme going this week.  If you want to know how to get the stink out of your Kitchen Drain, or Washer, they know stink.

Crystal from Budgeting in the Fun Stuff had articles all over the place this week, but I think my favorite was Do You Exchange Gifts with your Significant Other over at Sweating the Big Stuff.

The winner for funniest post of the week, was Car Negotiation Coach’s ranking of Best Cars to Use During a Zombie Apocalypse. (Dude, my comment is still in your spam folder. Please rescue me.)

The article that wins the prize for getting me the most annoyed about our government is Bucksom Boomer’s story on Food Stamps.  Apparently California has a very low food stamp usage and wants more people to apply for food stamps because poor people will have more money to spent on consumer goods. Um you want to give people food stamps so they can go buy an I-phone?  The basic math is this: For every $1 you don’t spend on food, you’ll spend $1.84 on something taxable instead. Well, $1 to get $0.18 in tax money in return is certainly is the dumbest math ever. Since it’s federal money, California politicians must see it as free.  If this doesn’t summarize how whacked our country is, I don’t know what does. I personally don’t want to be subsidizing people’s consumer purchases…ESPECIALLY if they don’t want the food stamps in the first place. End Rant.

Most Educational post this week if you’re a blogger  was Neville’s Financial Blog. His article was the Affiliate Marketing Experiment. I don’t use Ad Sense or any other affiliate marketing on my blog yet, but am thinking about it. He did an experiment where he decided to hock an item via an affiliate via a blog article. He then bought ad-sense ads to increase the page rank of the blog article to see if he could net a profit from it.  It’s a 7 part series and he did end up making a profit in the end. Check it out.

  1. Thanks for including me in the weekly roundup. Have a great weekend!

  2. Thanks for including us!

Did you do that their/they’re thing on purpose just to bug Squirrelers? (their lists… they’re = they are)

As an economist, I disagree on your take on the food stamps. And it isn’t about the iphone, it’s about the people buying *food* and the people who sell the food buy the iphone or food for their family etc. It isn’t the foodstamp users spending the $1.84. It’s everybody down the chain after they buy food adding up. (The multiplier effect.) In addition, food banks in California are having huge amounts of trouble… people who qualify for foodstamps but are using food banks are crowding out people who don’t qualify for foodstamps but need emergency food. And that can hurt children whose parents are bad budgeters. We need to feed our children so that they grow up to not have mental and health problems so they’re productive members of society and so that the system doesn’t have to put them in jail later.

And I do wish the lady at the boxcar kids blog would stop feeling this shame that certain segments of culture are forcing on her and would get on foodstamps and the other programs she qualifies for so she can have a little more security for her 3 kids (that she adopted when she was an upper middle class single woman with savings, a house, and a great job). It took a long time for her to break down enough to get healthcare for her kids… too long.

  3. Thanks for the link!! Have a great weekend and enjoy that currant jelly 🙂

  4. Thanks for mentioning my staff writer post! I loved the Car Negotiation Coach’s post too!

  5. Great roundup, I’m off to go check Neville’s blog now!!!

  6. Sandy, I’m really glad you liked my post! And thanks for including me here.

I just emptied my spam folder (sorry 🙁 ). If you leave another comment I promise I’ll be on the lookout…I usually catch most of ’em, but i must have been really wrapped up re-inforcing my car’s grill with rebar.

  7. Nicole. I see your point (I didn’t think about the food pantries). My world view is less complex. I think of Babci on one end of the poor…too proud to take handouts but I was always fed and nourished. Then there’s other end..the people who abuse the system. I kind of assumed that the people who didn’t want food stamps were people too proud for handouts that found other ways, like babci, not people who are malnourishing their kids. BTW. I always get their and they’re confused. You’ve gotta cut me some slack, english was my second language.

Car Guy- Thanks. It’s not you, it’s me. Every site thinks I’m spam. It’s super annoying.
