Welcome MSN Readers – Best of First Gen

by Sandy L on March 2, 2011

Welcome MSN readers and thank you for taking the time to stop by to visit First Gen American. This is a quirky little personal finance blog that tells tales of my very industrious Polish immigrant mom.  She is self described as “round like barrel” and she is a real character. People love hearing the crazy tales of  how she rose above all kinds of hardships throughout her life. Here on the blog, people know her as “Babci.”  This means grandma in Polish and is pronounced “Bahbchee”.

If you like this site, I would love it if you subscribed to my RSS feed. It’s that little yellow button in the top right corner of the blog, or you can enter your email on the right for email deliveries.  I only write about 2 articles a week, so I promise I won’t clog your reader.

If you want to stay a little while, here are some of people’s favorite stories in no particular order.  You can also look through the most Popular Posts on the right.

Best of Babci:

Babci Rules of Personal Finance – Rules she lives by and I was told quite a few of her quotes are real keepers.

Dumpster Diving: Babci the Golfer – A few of my regular readers always reference this story. It’s such a Babci thing to do.

Haggling Nickles – this just goes to show you that Babci will always negotiate to get the best deal.

Perspective – Hard to Gain but Good to Have.  The story of my mom coming to America and the gift she brought my uncle.

4 Wheeling with Babci – an essential step in making her annual batch of Sauerkraut.

Minimum Wage and No Credit History = Babci.  See how she did it.

Babci’s Mottos to Live by – Some of her favorite old world sayings

Babci, Bandits and Decision Making - See what Babci thinks of Bandits

Babci’s Favorite Sayings on Marriage – She had a bad one, so don’t expect sugarplums and gumdrops from this post

Frugal Living

Nature vs Nuture on Frugalism - Can you be born frugal?

Buy a House without a Mortgage - Yup, it can be done. Even today.

Extreme Frugalism - I love that word frugalism..I don’t think it’s even a real word.  This article might give you some new ideas to try..some of them are gross, like reusing bath water, but they are frugal indeed.

Soap Opera Drama

Negative Role Models – Meet my loser dad and how you can even learn from negative role models.

Verbal Abuse, Brainwashing, and Personal Finance – Verbal Abuse is real.

Settling Estate Disputes Babci Style – The aftermath after my dad died.

Best of the Rest

You life doesn’t have to be chaotic – my theory that much of the stress we feel is self imposed
